Going away to a fantastic resort and spending focused time studying and practicing kumihimo design is pretty amazing. You’re looking forward to mastering the how and why of designing knock-out kumihimo necklaces. You’re excited by the idea of knowing what your braids will look like before you even string the first bead. You’re dreaming about how much more fun you’ll have beading when you more skillfully choose and balance your colors,

BUT you’ve got some questions about the details.

We’ve been getting lots of emails and phone calls from folks with questions about the retreat. So I thought it might be helpful to gather them into this list of frequently asked questions.

Will we be working on the disk or the marudai?
The focus of the workshop is the design process. We’ll do some quick sampler projects on the disk, but the majority of the hands-on time will be spent designing and charting your bead patterns. The skills you learn can be applied to braids on either the disk or marudai, whichever you prefer to work with at home, but for your convenience during this retreat you’ll only need a disk.

What are we going to make?
You’re going to write your own kumihimo patterns focusing on ombrés, color blocking, pattern blocking, and fades. Unlike most classes this isn’t about us all making a specific, predetermined design chosen by the teacher. You’re here to unlock your design talents and to learn HOW to come up with your own designs.

With that in mind, think of the kit as tools you will work with to hone your design skills. You’ll be writing your patterns based on the beads in your kit.

Are there any prerequisites?
You should be comfortable with beaded kumihimo (beaded kongoh gumi) on either the disk or the marudai.

I attended your Wine, Dine & Design retreat in Arizona. Will I learn anything new here?
You bet! Although the course material is the same, you’ll be approaching it from a different level. The keys to improving as a designer are studying, practicing, and focusing. This time around you’ll be able to apply the design concepts at a higher level and improve your design skills mastery through practice.

Can I bring my spouse or other non-student guest?
Sure!  You may have one additional non-participating person in your room for no additional charge.  They’re on their own for meals. There are lots of fantastic attractions in the area to keep your partner busy… wineries, the beach, and of course Rancho Bernardo Inn’s famous spa and golf course.

My friend wants to attend the retreat, too. Can we room together?

Absolutely! And you can save some dough, too! Let us know when you register and we can hook you up with the double occupancy rate.

What meals are included?
Dinner Thursday night and lunch on Friday & Saturday

Where can I get breakfast?
There are two great on-site breakfast restaurants at the Rancho Bernardo Inn. There’s Café Granada, a little coffee shop. It has all your favorite caffeinated beverages as well as breakfast sandwiches and pastries. The Veranda Fireside also offers a full service cooked-to-order breakfast. Or you could always call room service and treat yourself to breakfast in bed.

What about dinner Friday & Saturday?
I highly recommend the on-site Veranda Fireside Grill. The menus change seasonally and are always fresh, modern, and feature lots of local ingredients. Yum! Plus it has stunning golf course views and live music on the patio.

If you’re looking for more of a fine dining experience, the Avant restaurant upstairs offers gourmet small plates and wine pairings.

Or if you’d rather dine in, you could order room service.

What’ the best way to get to the Rancho Bernardo Inn?
By air you want to fly into the San Diego airport. Rancho Bernardo Inn is about a 40 minute drive from the there. When I go, I always just Uber or Lyft. That’s typically in the $45-$50 range depending on time of day. There’s also a Super Shuttle available that’s about $27.

If you’re driving in or if you rented a car at the airport, there’s plenty of parking at Rancho Bernardo Inn. We’ve negotiated a reduced parking rate of $10 per night (regularly $27).

I’d like to book a spa treatment during my retreat. When will I be available for that?
Great idea! Please book your spa treatments before 6pm on Thursday or after 11:30am on Sunday. Be sure to let them know you’re with our group when you book because you get a 10% discount.

What if something comes up after I’ve registered and I can’t attend?
We know that life can be unpredictable and that is why we highly recommend that you purchase cancellation and travel insurance just as you would for any other vacation package. Because so many moving parts have to work in harmony for an event like this to be a success, once you register we are counting on your attendance. We reserve lodging, catering, and other professional services on your behalf.

Fifty percent of your registration fee will be refunded for cancellations at least 60 days prior to the start of the retreat. There will be no refunds, store credits, or transfers to other events for cancellations less than 60 days prior to the retreat.
