I knew this would be a beautiful necklace from the moment I unpacked our shipment of hand-made, Czech glass chain. The table cut flowers are polished on a special grinding stone until each side of the bead shines with a magnificent luster that contrasts with the recessed details. Then an artisan wire wraps each flower and links it to perfectly coordinating wire wrapped accent beads. When handling these chains, you can feel the care and attention that went into making them.
By the Light of the Moon is even more beautiful than I had imagined when I first held those chains in my hands and started dreaming. I am absolutely THRILLED with how this necklace turned out! It's truly stunning!
Three strands of beaded chain are connect to a pair of luna moth pendants symbolizing renewal and transformation. From there the necklace moves seamlessly into the beaded ombré braid, the colors gracefully blending from one into the other. For each of the sixteen different colorways, we selected the perfect trio of seed bead colors, paying careful attention to harmony and contrast. Elegant, simple endcaps and toggle clasp complete the piece. *Chef's Kiss*
By the Light of the Moon is absolutely EXQUISITE in the looks department, but still accessible to the beginner braider.
By stringing each warp with a specific sequence of beads you can achieve this beautiful ombré
effect! By the Light of the Moon is a kumihimo kit for all levels. Previous experience with the basic round braid (kongoh gumi) on the foam disk is helpful, but not required. If this is your very first beaded kumihimo project, please review our Beaded Kumihimo Starter Guide before beginning your necklace. Following the detailed, step-by-step instructions in the kit, you'll step up your jewelry-making game by learning how and where to separate the chain links, how to attach them to the moth pendants so they drape beautifully, and how to braid directly from the pendant.
Techniques used: kumihimo and basic jewelry making
The By the Light of the Moon kit includes printed instructions, big-eye needle, size 18 Superlon, size 8 Japanese seed beads, Czech glass chain, TierraCast luna moth pendants, TierraCast 8mm endcaps, TierraCast toggle clasp, TierraCast jump rings, binding thread, and E6000 glue. The kit includes three stringing charts so you can choose your finished length: ~26", ~30" or ~34". This necklace is luxuriously long!
Fit guide: The beaded chain focal area is the same length for three necklace sizes. What you're changing is the length of the beaded braids. You want the braided portions long enough so that the moths sit at or below your collar bones. Measuring from top of moth to top of moth, your length options for the back of the necklace are ~14 1/2" (~26" finished length), ~18 1/2" (~30" finished length), or ~22 1/2" (~34" finished length.) In the photo below, I'm wearing the 26" finished length.
You’ll need the following tools (not included) to complete the project: foam kumihimo disk (regular 1/2″ thickness), 8 weighted bobbins (~23g each), clip-on center weight (~45g), scissors, and jewelry pliers.
