If you’re new to kumihimo, you might have found beads a bit intimidating. That’s why we designed this kit especially for absolute beginners. Using satin rattail and focusing on fiber-based braiding, this kit is a gentle introduction that makes learning both fun and accessible.  Plus, you'll receive enough rattail and endcaps to create three complete kumihimo necklaces!

Why You'll Love It:

  • Beginner-Friendly: Crafted with simplicity in mind, this kit is a perfect starting point.
  • Proven Method: This is how we started many of our students back in our brick-and-mortar shop—now perfected for you to learn at home!
  • Beautiful Results: Create gorgeous braids with ease, building confidence with every move.

The Kumihimo Starter Kit with Satin Rattail includes: Basic Tool Kit

One 4" kumihimo disk with 1 3/8" (3.5cm) center hole. The foam board disk is 1/2" (~1cm) thick. This is the standard size that you'll use to assemble all of your Design & Adorn kumihimo kits.

Because the satin rattail is rather thick and can stretch out the slots in the kumihimo disk, I like to reserve one disk for rattail, ribbon, and other thicker cords and an other kumihimo disk just for by beaded projects that use thinner cords.

Eight plain bobbins. We don't need weighted bobbins when we're making fiber-based kumihimo jewelry.  These plain (unweighted) bobbins pop open & close easily and are perfect for keeping our long braiding cords from tangling while we work.

One spool of size D nymo thread in a random color.  This is our go-to binding thread for binding the ends of our kumhimo projects, both fiber-based and beaded.  It's inexpensive and holds the knot well.  Each spool contains approximately 64 yards on thread and is enough to make over 100 binding knots.

One tiny tube (0.18 oz.) of E6000 glue. This is our go-to adhesive for gluing on endcaps.  Be sure to let dry, undisturbed for 24 hours before wearing your jewelry.  It's hard to measure just how far one tube of glue goes when it comes to gluing on endcaps, but I feel very confident that each tiny tube is enough for at least 10 projects.

Six packs of 2mm nylon satin rattail cord.  2mm Nylon Rattail is strong, durable, and easy to braid with!  Each pack is one continuous piece approximately six yards long, twisted into a mini skein.  You'll use two packs of rattail for each braid, so this is enough material for three braids, each approximately 24" long!

Three sets of 8mm stainless steel magnetic endcaps.  These are a perfect fit over 8-warp braids made with 2mm nylon rattail.  You'll glue them on using the E6000 glue.

Two pages of illustrated written instructions.  You'll learn everything you need to get started on your kumihimo adventure:  setting up the disk, braiding moves for the basic round spiral braid, binding, cutting the ends of the braid, and gluing on endcaps.
