The Zephyr necklace uses a 16-warp variation of the half-round braid structure.  What's neat about doubling the number of warps is how dramatically the shape changes!  What was mostly flat is now sturdy, thick, and has an interesting trapezoidal cross-section.

Ready for a long Japanese name?  Kawari Hira Kara Gumi.  Some of those words you may already know from other braids.  Kara is from China and Gumi is braid.  Hira means flat and broad.  Kawari is variation.  So this very descriptive Japanese title means a variation of a flat braid from China.

This braid can be done on either the foam disk or the marudai, but in class we'll all work on the disk.

Zephyr is a long over-the-head necklace (about 25" long not counting the tassel).  The smooth round satin cord provides structure, strength, and stability to the braid while the variegated adds delightfully shifting colors and metallic accents.  The ends of the braid are finished with a playful tassel.

Location:  Any place you have good internet and good lighting.

Event type:  Live online class via Zoom.  You need to already know how to use Zoom before coming to class.  I am not able to provide Zoom tech support.

Instructor:  Rebecca Combs (she/her)

Materials Included: Yes!  Your class includes all the materials needed to make the Zephyr Necklace:

  • detailed step-by-step written instructions
  • variegated ribbon with metallic accents
  • satin cord
  • color-coordinating binding thread

Choose your colorway when you sign up for class.  Your kit ships free anywhere in the USA.

Homework Required:  No.

Skill Level:  Previous experience with kumihimo braiding on a foam disk is required.  Experience with the 8-warp Half-Round Braid (That' our Harmony necklace project.) is very helpful, but not required.

Will the necklace be completed in class?  No, but you'll learn everything you need to finish it on your own.

Tools needed:

  • kumihimo disk standard thickness (I like the 4", but 6" works fine for this project.)
  • 16 plain bobbins (weighted bobbins are ok, too, but the plain ones work fine for this project.)
  • 1 90g clip-on center weight or 2 45g clip-on center weights
  • scissors
  • tape measure
  • rigid beading needle or sewing needle
  • thread puller and/or thimble
  • Hypo Cement jewelry glue (optional)

What if I need to cancel?  This event is non-refundable.  Please check your schedule carefully before signing up.

Is there a replay available?  No, this is a live event and the zoom class will not be recorded for student privacy; however,  I have pre-recorded high resolution videos of how to finish the necklace (binding, sewing, & making the tassel.)  These videos will be available to students after class as private YouTube links.
